DID YOU KNOW…
Resilience starts with relationships
Why do some kids with challenging life circumstances succeed while others don't? Poverty, fragmented family life, illness, stress and other social and physical challenges are difficulties faced by many children today. Understanding why some children are more resilient than others is key to supporting not just those at risk, but all children and families. And as delegates to the National Dialogue on Resilience in Youth learned in Winnipeg this past fall relationships and attachment are critical components in fostering resilience. A review of five decades of research on resilience among children and adults has led UBC's Dr. Kim Schonert-Reichl to the simple conclusion that, "Resilience rests, fundamentally, on relationships.”
